This 9-hour professional development course is offered to All Our Kin’s Family Child Care Providers. Through this course, participants will learn about the Montessori approach to education, which provides both insight and practices for child-centered care that is developmentally attuned and highly practical while, at the same time, offering a pedagogy rooted in the belief in the unmanifested potential and inherent assets of both children and adults.
Participants in this course will learn about:

  • Culturally Responsive & Asset-Based Montessori Pedagogy in Home Environments
  • Needs and Stages of Child Development
  • Montessori Practices in Home Environments 
  • Role of the Montessori Adult in Family Child Care 
  • Adult and Child Resilience and Emotional Wellbeing as Response to Stress and Trauma 
  • Behavior Management and Family Communication

All sessions will be held virtually from 6:30-8:00pm EST on the following dates:

  • January 22
  • January 29
  • February 5
  • February 12
  • February 26 (No live session on February 19th, Presidents’ Day)
  • March 4

Participants who successfully complete this course will be eligible to request Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from Loyola University Maryland.

Este curso de desarrollo profesional de 9 horas se ofrece a los proveedores de cuidado infantil familiar de All Our Kin. A través de este curso, los participantes aprenderán sobre el enfoque educativo Montessori, que proporciona conocimientos y prácticas para el cuidado centrado en el niño que está en sintonía con el desarrollo y es altamente práctico y, al mismo tiempo, ofrece una pedagogía arraigada en la creencia en el potencial no manifestado y bienes inherentes tanto de niños como de adultos.

Los participantes de este curso aprenderán sobre:

  • Pedagogía Montessori culturalmente receptiva y basada en suficiencias y puntos fuertes en entornos domésticos
  • Necesidades y etapas del desarrollo infantil
  • Prácticas Montessori en entornos domésticos
  • Papel del adulto Montessori en el cuidado infantil familiar
  • Resiliencia y bienestar emocional de adultos y niños como respuesta al estrés y al trauma
  • Manejo del comportamiento y comunicación familiar

Todas las sesiones se llevarán a cabo virtualmente de 6:30 a 8:00 p. m. EST en las siguientes fechas:

  • 22 de enero
  • 29 de enero
  • 5 de febrero
  • 12 de febrero
  • 26 de febrero (no habrá sesión en vivo el 19 de febrero, Día de los Presidentes)
  • 4 de marzo

Los participantes que completen con éxito este curso serán elegibles para solicitar Unidades de Educación Continua (CEU) de la Universidad Loyola de Maryland.

About the Instructor/Acerca del instructor

Cristina Encinas is the Operations Director of Estrellitas Montessori School in Washington, DC and Takoma Park, MD, serving children 6 month to 5 years old. She has more than 20 years of experience in Montessori education having earned her certification from the American Montessori Society for Preschool and Infants and Toddlers in 1990. She earned a B.A. in Human Services from Springfield College, a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Trinity College; and a second Master’s in Early Childhood Special Education from Catholic University in 2013. Ms. Encinas is originally from Mexico and has been in the DC area for 30 years, working in Montessori bilingual Education since 2003. A mother of two children and an abuela (Grandmother) of 7-month-old Nicolas,  she believes that Montessori is the best way to support children’s development and infancy is the most important developmental stage! 

Cristina Encinas es la directora de operaciones de la escuela Estrellitas Montessori en Washington, DC y Takoma Park, MD, y atiende a niños de 6 meses a 5 años. Tiene más de 20 años de experiencia en educación Montessori y obtuvo su certificación del American Montessori Society para Preescolares e Infantes y Andarines  en 1990. Obtuvo una licenciatura en Servicios Humanos de Springfield College, una Maestría en Administración Educativa de Trinity College; y una segunda Maestría en Educación Especial Infantil Temprana de la Universidad Católica en 2013. La Sra. Encinas es originaria de México y ha estado en el área de DC durante 30 años, trabajando en Educación bilingüe Montessori desde 2003. Madre de dos hijos y abuela de Nicolas, de 7 meses, siente que Montessori es la mejor manera de apoyar el desarrollo de los niños y que la infancia es la etapa de desarrollo más importante.

Desmond BlackburnFacing History and Ourselves is a non-profit organization founded in 1976 to “use lessons of history to challenge teachers and their students to stand up to bigotry and hate.” Today, Facing History and Ourselves is a global organization with a network of hundreds of thousands of educators reaching millions of students worldwide, providing extensive curriculum, professional development, and resources. CEO Desmond Blackburn began his public education career as a high school math teacher in Florida and rose through the state’s school system, including serving as principal at a public Montessori school, to become Superintendent of Brevard Public Schools. Blackburn has served as CEO of the New Teacher Center, a national nonprofit that works to disrupt the predictability of educational inequities for systemically underserved students. He was previously Deputy Chancellor of School Leadership for the New York City Department of Education, the largest school system in the nation, before joining Facing History and Ourselves this year.
