Montessori Teacher Residency

Teacher preparation for public Montessori

For more than a decade, NCMPS has been developing and delivering Montessori teacher preparation specifically for teachers working in public schools.

This means preparation that:

  • Is a residency model embedded in a public school setting
  • Prepares teachers to fully implement Montessori in public programs
  • Delivers a standards-aligned curriculum
  • Understands cultural representation, neurodiversity, multilingual learning, and special education
  • Is accessible for teachers and schools
  • Prepares teachers from the school’s own community

The National Center developed its Montessori teacher residency model to meet these needs.

The National Center partners with schools, districts, and LEAs to deliver teacher preparation in its National Center Montessori Teacher Residency (NCMTR):

  • on site
  • on a customized schedule
  • at the Primary (PK3–K), Elementary I (1st–3rd grade), and Elementary I-II (1st–6th grade) levels.

The National Center has trained more than 100 teachers working with district and charter schools in California, Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Washington, and the District of Columbia

For Schools and School Districts

Successful Montessori implementation requires specialized preparation. Staffing every classroom with a teacher trained at the appropriate level is an essential element for a successful public Montessori program. But accredited Montessori preparation programs may be far away, expensive, and not oriented to public education.

The National Center Montessori Teacher Residency works with teachers and paraprofessionals already in your system, coming to you instead of requiring travel, and working with your schedule so teachers are ready to start when you need them. Year-round wrap-around support and coaching helps new Montessori teachers grow into their roles. Programs can be designed to fit school schedules, calendars, and labor agreements.

Accreditation: The National Center Montessori Teacher Residency is accredited through the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE). You can read more about MACTE accreditation and affiliation below.

Affiliate with NCMPS

New and existing teacher education programs can affiliate with the National Center for MACTE accreditation, the U.S. Department of Education recognized accreditor for Montessori teacher education programs. MACTE accreditation is widely recognized, and is required in 8 of the 11 states offering a pathway to teacher licensure for Montessori trained teachers.

Teacher education programs which affiliate with the National Center commit to a set of principles and practices which support transformational public Montessori teacher preparation:

  • Residency model: Preparation is embedded in the schools where adult learners are working.
  • Integrated structural features:
    • Complete Montessori teacher preparation aligned to public school standards.
    • Additional coursework specific to public Montessori.
    • A school culture of continuous improvement.
  • Theory: Understanding of Montessori theory is linked directly to practice.
  • Culture: Partner schools support continuous improvement using the NCMPS Coaching, Child Study, and Lesson Study systems.
  • Service to all children: Preparation explicitly addresses the diverse needs of all children through coursework and ongoing and embedded critical reflection.
